Shoprite workers countrywide have gone on strike. The workers are demanding among other things improved conditions of service, salary increments and dismissal of some top management officials whom they accuse of being incompetent.

A check by Radio Musiotunya at Musiotunya square Shopping Mall in Livingstone found the workers loitering outside the shop while others were singing and chanting slogans demanding more money in their pockets.Cstomers, mostly tourists were seen stranded as they didn’t have an alternative place to shop.

Local union representatives who were found at the scene refused to talk to reporters for fear of being victimized.

In Kitwe workers were seated outside the shop. Some Shoprite workers said that they have had decided to go on strike because of the company’s failure to implement the revised minimum wage and the rampant casualisation being perpetrated by the management at the company.

“Our patience should not be mistaken for being dull or ignorant. So today, we are on strike because of failure to implement the revised minimum wage and the rampant casualisation. We want these issues to be addressed,’ said the striking Shoprite workers.

And Labor and social security Minister, Fackson Shamenda appealed to the workers to be peaceful as the negotiations are still on going .Mr Shamenda said the workers have the right to fight for what is rightfully theirs but should do it in a calm and mature manner.
